Focus On 2026 Election: Shah Begins Two-Day's Assam Visit

Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Assam on Thursday (August 28) for a two-day visit marked by political and official engagements, with the spotlight on preparations for the 2026 Assembly elections.

Soon after landing in Guwahati, Shah chaired the BJP core committee meeting at the party headquarters and joined state leaders for dinner. The meeting deliberated on election strategy and key organisational issues.

Ahead of his visit, Shah wrote on X that he would chair the party’s core committee meeting, inaugurate the National Cyber Forensic Laboratory, address the NDA Panchayat Pratinidhi Sammelan, and join the birth centenary celebrations of former chief minister Golap Borbora.

Welcoming him, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Assam was “all geared up” for Shah’s visit and credited his leadership for helping the state achieve “new territories in peace and development.”

On Friday, Shah will inaugurate the newly built Brahmaputra wing of Raj Bhavan, e-inaugurate the National Cyber Forensic Laboratory, and launch several projects of ITBP, SSB and Assam Rifles. Later, he will address the Panchayat Sammelan at Khanapara, which the BJP views as the formal launch of its 2026 Assembly election campaign.

He will also review the progress of the Jyoti Bishnu Cultural Complex, a 5,000-seat auditorium under construction, before attending the centenary programme of Golap Borbora. Shah is scheduled to return to New Delhi in the evening.
