All those applying for new Aadhaar cards in Assam will now have to submit their NRC Application Receipt Number (ARN), Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday.
Chief Minister Sarma said in a press conference, "The number of applications for Aadhar cards is more than the population. This means that some citizens may be suspicious. Therefore, we have decided that new applicants will have to provide the receipt number of their NRC application."
He said that this will stop the infiltration of illegal foreign nationals and the state government will be very strict while issuing Aadhar cards. He said, it will not be easy to get Aadhar card in Assam.
He further said, the 9.55 lakh people whose biometric information has been recorded during the NRC process will not need the NRC application receipt number and will be able to get their Aadhar card. He also said that the Center has given the right to the state governments to decide whether Aadhaar card can be issued to a person or not. Aadhaar cards will be issued to new applicants in Assam only when a no objection certificate is provided from the district commissioner. This certificate will be issued after thorough investigation of all aspects. The Chief Minister also said that his government will speed up the process of identifying illegal foreign nationals.
