Former India U-15 Star Rajesh Banik Passes Away

Former India Under-15 cricketer and Tripura all-rounder Rajesh Banik died in a road accident at Anandanagar in West Tripura on Friday night. He was 40.

According to the officials, Banik sustained grievous injuries after his motorcycle met with an accident and was taken to GBP Hospital in Agartala, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. His family declined a post-mortem examination and submitted a written declaration to the police.

Born on December 12, 1984, in Agartala’s Krishna Nagar, Banik showed early promise as an all-rounder. He made his Ranji Trophy debut for Tripura in 2002–03, later earning selection for the India Under-15 squad in the Costcutter World Challenge 2000 alongside future India stars Ambati Rayudu and Irfan Pathan.

A dependable middle-order batsman and crafty leg-spinner, Banik led Tripura’s historic 2016–17 Ranji Trophy campaign, guiding the team to its first-ever quarterfinals. In his career, he represented Tripura in 42 first-class, 24 List A, and 18 T20 matches.

After retirement, Banik contributed to the sport as a selector for the state Under-16 team, mentoring budding players with his trademark humility and dedication.

The Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) paid tribute to him on Saturday. “We have lost a talented cricketer and a sincere selector. May his soul rest in peace,” said TCA secretary Subarata Dey.

Anirban Deb, secretary of the Tripura Sports Journalists’ Club, said Banik’s contribution extended beyond his playing career. “He was one of the finest all-rounders Tripura produced and had a rare eye for spotting young talent,” Deb remarked.

His sudden demise has left the Tripura cricket fraternity in mourning, marking the loss of a beloved player, mentor, and friend
