France has criticized the trade deal reached on Sunday between US President Donald Trump and European Union (EU) President Ursula von der Leyen.
French Prime Minister Francois Berrou has called it a black day for the EU.
Berro said the EU had caved in to President Trump's increasing tariff pressure. He wrote on X-
"It is tragic when an alliance of free nations, formed to defend their shared values and interests, buckles under pressure."
At the same time, France's European Affairs Minister Benjamin Haddad said that this situation is not right and the EU should retaliate.
France's Trade Minister Laurent Saint-Martin said - Trump only understands the language of power. We should have taken retaliatory steps earlier, then perhaps the deal would have been better.
However, French President Emmanuel Macron has remained silent on this matter.
Italy-Germany welcome trade deal:
German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz and Italian Prime Minister Giordano Meloni welcomed the agreement. European Trade Commissioner Maroš Sefcovic called it a "major step" as it averted a trade war between the US and Europe.
Under this agreement, most goods going from Europe to America will be subjected to a 15% tariff, which is three times more than the current 4.8%.
However, a 30% tariff could be avoided after Trump's threat till August 1.
15% tariff will be imposed on 70% of goods from Europe According to the details of the agreement, 15% tariff will be imposed on 70% of goods from Europe. This includes cars, medicines and electronics goods.
However, there will be no tariffs on aircraft parts, some chemicals, semiconductor equipment and some agricultural products such as cork. There will also be no tariffs on medicines for now, and even if there is one in the future, it will not exceed 15%.
The EU will buy energy worth $750 billion i.e. about Rs 64 lakh crore from the US in the next three years. Along with this, the EU will invest $600 billion i.e. Rs 51 lakh crore in the US.
Talks on tariff were going on for 7 months:
The European Union and the US were negotiating on the tariff for the past 7 months. However, the EU was not giving any significant concessions. However, after Trump's threat of a 30% tariff, the EU softened its stand and an agreement was reached.
The European Union is the third largest economy in the world. It includes 27 countries of Europe. Every day, trade between the US and the European Union is around $3.5 billion. Mexico is the largest trading partner of the US.
