France will soon recognise Palestine as an independent nation, President Emmanuel Macron announced on Thursday.
He said he would formally announce the recognition during the UN General Assembly in September. Macron wrote on the social media platform X,
"I have taken this decision as part of France's commitment to lasting peace in the Middle East. Peace is possible. Today the most important thing is that the war in Gaza stops and the lives of civilians are saved."
The Palestinian Authority has expressed happiness over France's decision, while Israel has opposed it.
Israel said – giving reward to terrorism:
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly condemned the decision. He said,
"The decision is a reward for terrorism and will lead to another Iranian-backed proxy like Gaza, a Palestinian state that will be used to destroy Israel, not at peace with it."
The Palestinian Authority has welcomed France's move. A formal letter was handed to President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday. PLO Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh said,
"We applaud Macron's decision, which reflects France's commitment to international law and the rights of the Palestinian people."
So far more than 140 countries have recognized it
France is the largest Western country to officially recognize Palestine. So far more than 140 countries have recognized Palestine as an independent nation. These include many European countries.
The Palestinians are demanding an independent state. It includes the area of West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip. These were captured by Israel during the 1967 Middle East War.
France will hold an emergency meeting with Britain and Germany:
French President Emmanuel Macron is scheduled to hold an emergency meeting on Friday with the leaders of Britain and Germany to discuss the situation in Gaza, providing aid to hungry people and stopping the war.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said,
"Statehood is the birthright of the Palestinian people. A ceasefire will move us toward recognition of a Palestinian state and a two-state solution that guarantees peace and security for both Israel and Palestine."
France has the largest Jewish and Muslim population in Europe. The impact of tensions in the Middle East is also visible in France.
Macron had made a statement in support of Israel after Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7. But now he is openly expressing displeasure over Israel's action in Gaza.
France and Saudi Arabia are set to host a conference on the two-state solution at the United Nations next week.
