Gandacherra Violence, Tripura: THRC Issues Notice To DGP, DM

The Tripura Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to the Director General of Police and  District Magistrate of Dhalai over the violence in Gandacherra earlier this month, asking what action has been taken against those who indulged in arson and looting of houses in the area.

The commission has asked Director General of Police (DGP) Amitabh Ranjan and Dhalai District Magistrate Saju Waheed to submit their report within three weeks.

On July 12, a mob had looted and set on fire several houses after a 19-year-old man was killed in a clash between two groups in Dhalai district.

In the notice, Justice SC Das, chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Tripura, said, "Before initiating a formal investigation, the Commission seeks a report from the DGP of Tripura on what action has been taken by the law enforcement agencies to nab the culprits of such incident and whether any criminal case has been registered and if so, under which sections and whether any miscreant has been arrested in connection with the alleged crime."

The commission also directed the District Magistrate to investigate the incident and submit a report on "what action has been taken to rehabilitate the victims and to resettle them in the same condition as before the alleged incident."

Justice Das said, "Inaction or negligence on the part of public servants in preventing violation of human rights is actionable and hence, notices are issued to submit preliminary reports within three weeks for further action.
