India’s new ODI captain Shubman Gill on Thursday reaffirmed that senior stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remain integral to India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Speaking on the eve of the second Test against West Indies in Delhi, Gill said,
> “Absolutely. The experience these two have and the matches they’ve won for India – very few match their record. Players of such skill, quality and experience are rare in world cricket. On that front, we are definitely looking at them as part of our future plans.”
Gill, who recently replaced Rohit Sharma as ODI captain, revealed that he was informed of his elevation slightly before the official announcement.
> “It was announced after the first Test against West Indies in Ahmedabad, but I got to know a bit earlier. It’s an honour to lead India,” he said.
Expressing excitement for the upcoming ODI series against Australia starting October 19, Gill added,
“I’m really looking forward to the future. I want to stay in the present and focus on winning everything we can in the coming months.”
