GNRC to Set Up Superspecialty Hospital in Tripura: CM Saha

Chief Minister Manik Saha on Thursday announced that the state government has entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Guwahati Neurological Research Centre (GNRC) to establish a superspecialty hospital at Hapania in West Tripura district, marking another step toward strengthening the state’s healthcare infrastructure.

The proposed facility is expected to come up on vacant land belonging to Tripura Jute Mills Ltd. According to the chief minister, a team from the state’s health department has already visited Guwahati to review GNRC’s infrastructure and clinical capabilities before the agreement was finalised. However, Saha, who also holds the health portfolio, refrained from elaborating on the specific provisions of the MoU.

Earlier, the state government had also formalised an agreement with Srija Hospitals and Research Institute, an Imphal-based medical institution, for the establishment of a super-specialty hospital and medical college at RK Nagar in the same district.

Highlighting broader efforts to upgrade healthcare services, the chief minister said the government is undertaking significant measures to enhance facilities and manpower at Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital and Agartala Government Medical College. In this regard, the state has signed an MoU with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi to streamline healthcare delivery at GBP Hospital.

Acting on recommendations from AIIMS, the number of ICU beds at the hospital will be expanded from 156 to 326. In addition, GBP Hospital has been integrated with AIIMS New Delhi through telemedicine facilities, enabling patients in Tripura to access specialised consultations and advanced medical guidance.

Saha further announced that a 16-bed dedicated intensive care unit for patients suffering from severe respiratory ailments, along with a fully equipped ICU at the trauma centre, became operational at the hospital on Thursday.

The chief minister also revealed that the state cabinet has deliberated on the establishment of a medical university aimed at regulating medical colleges and allied health institutions in Tripura. The initiative, he said, is intended to reduce the number of patients being referred outside the state by strengthening and optimising existing healthcare infrastructure.

Currently, Tripura has three medical colleges offering approximately 450 MBBS seats and 119 postgraduate courses.
