Governor Reviews Facilities at Juvenile, Detention Centres

Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu conducted a significant inspection on Wednesday morning at the Juvenile Home and the temporary Detention Centre in Narsingarh, Agartala, according to a statement issued by the Raj Bhavan.

During the visit, the Governor held a crucial meeting with the officials in charge of both facilities. He directed them to adopt all necessary and appropriate measures to prevent any untoward incidents, including potential escapes, and emphasised the importance of maintaining proper records to ensure transparency and efficient administration.

The meeting was attended by Tapas Ray, Secretary of the Social Welfare and Social Education Department; Tapan Kumar Das, Director of the Department; officials from the administration; and the in-charge of the Juvenile Home. They briefed the Governor on the functioning, management practices, and current challenges of the institution.

After the meeting, Governor Nallu inspected the premises of the Juvenile Home and interacted with the children residing there. The facility currently accommodates both Indian minors and children from Bangladesh.

He subsequently visited the adjacent temporary Detention Centre, where he reviewed the living conditions, examined the rooms, and assessed the overall infrastructure and amenities provided to the detainees.

Speaking to the media following the visit, the Governor stated that children involved in criminal activities are housed at the Juvenile Home, where they receive structured training in various skills aimed at rehabilitating and reforming their behaviour. Regarding the Detention Centre, he noted that it primarily hosts foreign nationals, including Bangladeshi citizens, along with a few individuals who are mentally unstable.

Governor Nallu affirmed that all residents of both facilities are being provided with proper care and adequate amenities on humanitarian grounds. Expressing satisfaction with the arrangements, he concluded that the Juvenile Home and the Detention Centre are overall well maintained.
