Govt Not Interfere in TRAI Decision: Centre Over Telecom Tariff Hike

From July 3, 2024, private telecom operators in the country have increased the prices of mobile recharge plans. After this decision, mobile recharge plans of Jio, Airtel and Vodafone-Idea have become expensive by about 20 percent.

Smartphone users are very angry with this sudden decision taken by all telecom companies .

However, the companies had already informed their customers about this and given them the option of advance recharge.

It was also being claimed about the government that the Government of India gave permission to Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone-Idea to hike tariffs without any regulation.

In this connection, the government has clarified the situation regarding mobile tariff hike.

In an official press release, the regulatory body said that with three private sector companies and one public sector company, the mobile services market is driven by the market forces of demand and supply.

According to the press release, the rates of telecommunication services are determined by market forces. These rates are determined within the regulatory framework notified by the independent regulator i.e. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.

The Indian government says that it does not interfere in the decisions of the free market as this functionality is within the jurisdiction of TRAI.

The government says that telecom operators inform TRAI in advance about any changes in the tariff of mobile services. TRAI monitors that such changes are made within the prescribed regulatory framework
