The Assam government has planned to make arrangements for the stay of pilgrims as this holy fair begins. The government has converted the Pandu port camp into a shelter for pilgrims.

The camp has a capacity to accommodate 15,000 people. Food, proper sanitation facilities and bathing facilities have been arranged there.

Devotees dressed in colourful attire climb the Nilachal hill where the temple is located, carrying their wishes, prayers and respect for the goddess. Guwahati is abuzz with colour, noise and spiritual fervour as the Ambubachi Mela begins.

For four days, the city will be a centre of attraction for devotees, bringing them closer to their spiritual beliefs.

Let us tell you that there is a belief about Kamakhya Devi temple that the mother menstruates every year. Ambubachi fair is organized only when the mother menstruates.

It is said that when the mother menstruates, no auspicious work is done in Guwahati for three days. Meanwhile, the water of Brahmaputra river remains red. On the fourth day, after bathing the idol of Kamakhya Devi and performing Vedic rituals, the temple is reopened for the public to visit.

When the mother menstruates, a white cloth is kept in the temple. This cloth turns red. During the Ambubachi fair, those who come to see Matarani are given a red cloth as prasad. This cloth is called Ambubachi cloth.
