Hamas Chief Ismail Haniyeh Killed In Tehran

Iran's capital Tehran was bustling all day on Tuesday, July 30. The reason for this was the swearing-in ceremony of President Masoud Pezeshkian, in which many foreign delegations also reached Tehran.

After a busy day, when the people of Tehran went to sleep at night, they did not know that the next morning they were going to face such news, which would stir up the whole world.

Iranian officials said that Ismail Haniyeh, the political head of the Palestinian extremist organization Hamas, was assassinated at 1:45 am local time.

He was in Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony. According to an initial statement by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IGRC), Haniya's residence was attacked with a missile. Haniya and one of his bodyguards died in this. But now questions are being raised on this claim. A new and shocking information has come to light that Haniya's bodyguards may have a hand in his murder.

This claim has been made by Amwaz Media, a website that monitors events in the Middle East. Separate claims made from Tehran also point to this story. After Haniya's murder, Fars News Agency, an IRGC affiliate, claimed that Haniya was living in a special residence built for Iran-Iraq war veterans in northern Tehran. But Tasnim News Agency, an IRGC affiliate, did not say anything about any such facility.

Amwaj Media quoted an unnamed source as saying that Haniya and other high-profile guests attending the presidential inauguration were actually staying at the Saadabad Complex, the official residence of Iran's president.

An attack inside the fortified complex would be particularly audacious and would be extremely embarrassing for Iranian authorities to admit to, as other dignitaries were staying in the same area.

Iranian sources reported that Iran's Supreme National Security Council called an emergency meeting soon after the killing. It was convened at the residence of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with heads of government, judiciary and legislature in attendance.

Amwaz media quoted a senior source who attended the emergency session as saying that top officials suspect that Palestinian bodyguards deployed to protect Haniyeh may have been involved in the killing.

According to the source, Tehran's initial assessment is that a small quadcopter was used to target the Hamas leader following a tip-off from Haniyeh's security team.

The initial assessment of the use of quadcopters matches previous incidents blamed on Israel. Iranian intelligence services have also repeatedly claimed that equipment for small drones has been assembled inside the country.

It has been smuggled into Iran. At the same time, some believe that ground-based weapons may have been used behind this. Robotic weapons were used in the assassination of Iran's top nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh in November 2020.
