In a historic and politically explosive verdict, Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Monday sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death on charges of inciting murder and ordering murder during the July 2024 student protests. The tribunal found her guilty in two of the five cases filed against her, handing life imprisonment on the remaining counts.
The tribunal declared Hasina the “mastermind” behind the killings that rocked Bangladesh during the mass uprising last year. As the verdict was read, the courtroom reportedly broke into applause—an unusual scene for a high-profile judicial pronouncement.
Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan was also convicted of murder and sentenced to death. The third accused, former Inspector General of Police Abdullah Al-Mamun, who turned approver, received a five-year prison sentence. All properties belonging to Hasina and Asaduzzaman were ordered to be confiscated.
The verdict has triggered immediate geopolitical ripples. Bangladesh’s interim Prime Minister Mohammad Yunus has formally demanded Hasina’s deportation from India, where she and Asaduzzaman have been residing since leaving Bangladesh following the August 5, 2024 coup.
A statement from the Bangladesh PMO said the extradition treaty between the two countries obligates India to hand over the former premier.
In a striking twist to the story, the very court that Hasina herself established—the International Crimes Tribunal—has now handed her the country’s most severe punishment. Though the tribunal was originally legislated in 1973 to prosecute 1971 war crimes, it became functional only after Hasina revived it in 2010.
As the region braces for political aftershocks, New Delhi has yet to issue any formal response to the extradition request.
