Himanta Levels Foreign Link Charge on Gogoi

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday sparked a major political storm by alleging that Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi is “100% a Pakistani agent.” Sarma claimed Gogoi was “planted in India by a foreign power” and said, “The day I show the evidence, everyone will accept that he is a hundred percent Pakistani agent.”

The Chief Minister challenged Gogoi to file a defamation case if the allegations were false. He also said he would not reveal the evidence immediately, arguing that doing so might be seen as an attempt to divert attention from the ongoing investigation into singer Zubeen Garg’s death.

Background: From Coal Scam to Personal Attacks

What began as a political debate over illegal coal mining has now escalated into serious personal allegations.

In April, Gaurav Gogoi had accused the Assam government of protecting a massive illegal coal empire, claiming the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had recovered ₹1.58 crore in cash and exposed fake billing networks extracting around 1,200 tons of coal daily. Gogoi said all this was happening “under the Chief Minister’s nose.”

Responding sharply, CM Sarma accused Congress of double standards, saying,

“On one hand, Rahul Gandhi and his camp call ED a political tool, and on the other, their Deputy Leader praises the same agency. This shows the deep confusion within Congress.”

CM Sarma’s 8 Allegations Against Gaurav Gogoi and His Family

1. Ali Taukir Sheikh, allegedly connected to Pakistan government committees, had links with Elizabeth Gogoi, Gaurav Gogoi’s British wife.

2. Sheikh allegedly had unrestricted access to the Assam CM’s residence during Tarun Gogoi’s tenure.

3. Sarma questioned whether ISI tried to infiltrate the CMO when Tarun Gogoi was Chief Minister.

4. He alleged that Elizabeth Gogoi has not taken Indian citizenship even after 12 years of marriage.

5. Elizabeth, he claimed, worked under Ali Taukir Sheikh, raising suspicion of foreign influence.

6. Despite being a British citizen, Elizabeth allegedly participated in Indian election activities.

7. The CM urged the Central Government to investigate the matter.

8. He added that Assam has historically been a hotspot for ISI-linked groups operating from Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Congress Reaction

The Congress party has not yet issued an official statement on the latest accusations. However, party sources said the allegations are “politically motivated” and aimed at diverting public attention from key governance and law enforcement issues in Assam.

Analyst View

Political observers believe the escalating feud between CM Sarma and Gaurav Gogoi could mark a new low in Assam’s political discourse.
With both leaders entrenched in their positions, the controversy has blurred the line between investigative accountability and political vendetta, setting the stage for an intense showdown in Assam’s political landscape.
