Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that the viscera sample report of late singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg has provided a “specific direction” to the ongoing investigation into his mysterious death in Singapore last month.
Garg, 52, died on September 19 after collapsing while swimming during a yacht party organised by a group of Assamese NRIs in Singapore, where he had gone to participate in the North East India Festival (NEIF).
Following his death, the CID of Assam Police registered a case of murder, criminal conspiracy, and death due to negligence. A second post-mortem was conducted in Guwahati, and viscera samples were sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi for analysis.
“After the submission of the viscera test report by CFSL, Delhi, a specific direction has emerged in the investigation,” Sarma said during a Facebook Live session. “We are confident that the probe is proceeding in the right direction, and the entire chronology of events will be placed before the court within a few days.”
The Chief Minister said that four more Assamese NRIs linked to the case would record their statements before the CID’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Guwahati on Monday. Earlier, one NRI had already deposed before the agency.
“Now, only six more NRIs remain. It is their legal and moral duty to cooperate. If they fail to come voluntarily, we will take legal action,” Sarma warned.
So far, the CID has arrested seven persons, including NEIF organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, singer Amritprava Mahanta, and Garg’s cousin Sandipan Garg, an Assam Police Service officer. Two of Garg’s personal security officers, Paresh Baishya and Nandeswar Bora, have also been arrested for alleged mishandling of the singer’s money.
Sarma assured that the process of delivering justice to the late singer’s family has gained momentum after receiving the CFSL report. “I had promised justice for Zubeen, and I’m confident that we will fulfil that commitment soon,” he said.
