Reacting sharply to recent assertions from sections in Bangladesh advocating the separation of India’s Northeast and its merger with the neighbouring country, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday termed such ideas “irresponsible” and completely divorced from reality.
Speaking on the sidelines of an event at Lumding, Sarma said that for over a year, narratives have emerged in Bangladesh suggesting the detachment of the Northeast from India. He rejected these claims outright, asserting that India is today a rapidly growing economy, a nuclear power, and the world’s fourth-largest economy.
“Under such circumstances, it is inconceivable that Bangladesh could even contemplate such a notion,” he said.
The Chief Minister described these statements as reflective of “deeply flawed thinking” and cautioned that India should not remain silent in the face of such provocative rhetoric.
“We must not encourage or ignore this mindset. The people of Bangladesh should be clear that India will not tolerate or remain mute in response to such behaviour,” Sarma said.
Emphasising that the Northeast is an inseparable and integral part of India, Sarma dismissed the idea of territorial separation as politically motivated posturing with no grounding in reality.
His remarks follow comments made on December 15 by Hasnat Abdullah, a senior leader of Bangladesh’s newly formed National Citizen Party (NCP), who issued a provocative warning claiming that Dhaka could “isolate” India’s northeastern states if New Delhi attempted to destabilise Bangladesh.
