India Alliance Will Put Pressure On Govt Over MSP Issue: Rahul Gandhi

Delegation of 12 farmer leaders from across the country, led by Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political), met Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday, July 24 and explained their problems.

Congress MPs KC Venugopal, Amarinder Singh, Raja Waring, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Gurjit Singh Aujla, Dharamvir Gandhi, Dr. Amar Singh, Deepender Singh Hooda and Jai Prakash were also present in the meeting.

After the meeting with the farmer leaders, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said, "We have mentioned MSP with legal guarantee in our manifesto. We have assessed and it can be implemented. We just had a meeting in which it was decided that we will talk to other leaders of the INDIA alliance and put pressure on the government to give legal guarantee of MSP to the farmers of the country."

He also said, "There was confusion before the meeting because the farmers were not allowed inside. We invited them but they are not letting them inside Parliament. They are farmers, maybe that is the reason. You have to ask the Prime Minister the reason for this."

Earlier, sources said that the farmers talked to Rahul Gandhi about the issues of their respective states and also asked him to introduce a private member bill to meet the long-standing demands of revising the MSP and ensuring legal support.

Farmer organizations across the country want the MSP to be based on the Swaminathan Commission's C2+50 formula, which includes the cost of capital and land rent while calculating the support price. Under the MSP, farmers are given a fixed purchase guarantee by the government to protect them from a sharp fall in crop prices
