The Dhaka–Kolkata Maitree Bus Service via Agartala is poised for resumption from February 24, signalling a renewed phase of cross-border connectivity between India and Bangladesh after months of disruption.
The service, operated by the Tripura Road Transport Corporation (TRTC), had been suspended in the wake of political turbulence in Bangladesh following the mass uprising of August 2024.
The unrest culminated in the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024, and the subsequent installation of an interim administration.
With the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) now forming a stable government under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, bilateral engagement between New Delhi and Dhaka has reportedly entered a more constructive phase.
Diplomatic recalibration and renewed political stability have facilitated the restoration of previously suspended transport and communication linkages, including the Maitree bus service.
TRTC Vice Chairman Samar Roy confirmed that a trial run was successfully conducted to assess operational preparedness. Following a comprehensive review of logistical and regulatory arrangements, authorities have cleared the service for full-scale resumption.
Under the revised schedule, the Maitree bus will operate thrice weekly:
Agartala to Kolkata (via Dhaka): Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday
Kolkata to Agartala: Monday, Wednesday and Saturday
The reinstatement of the service is expected to substantially enhance passenger mobility, particularly for residents of Tripura who depend on the transit corridor through Bangladesh for expedited access to Kolkata.
Beyond its logistical significance, the revival of the Maitree bus underscores the broader restoration of people-to-people contact and the reassertion of cordial bilateral ties between the two neighbouring nations.
