India Calls For Fencing After Tripura Border Violence

India on Friday said that the death of three Bangladeshi nationals in Tripura following a clash with local villagers highlighted the urgent need for Bangladesh to take effective steps, including border fencing, to maintain the sanctity of the international boundary.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement hours after Dhaka “strongly condemned” the incident that took place on October 15.

According to the MEA, three Bangladeshi miscreants crossed into Indian territory near Bidyabil village in Tripura, about three kilometres from the international border, and attempted to steal cattle. They allegedly attacked villagers with iron dahs and knives, killing one local resident before being overpowered. Two of the intruders died on the spot, while a third succumbed to his injuries in hospital the next day.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “This incident underscores the need for Bangladesh to undertake necessary measures to uphold the sanctity of the international boundary and to support fencing where required to prevent cross-border crimes and smuggling.”

In a strongly worded statement earlier, Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry described the deaths as a “heinous act” and a “grave violation of human rights,” urging India to conduct a “transparent and impartial investigation” and ensure justice for the victims.

India has handed over the mortal remains of all three deceased individuals to Bangladesh authorities, and a case has been registered by the local police.
