The wait is finally over — India are the new queens of world cricket. In a display of skill, grit, and teamwork, the Women in Blue lifted their maiden ICC Women’s World Cup title, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in a thrilling final at the DY Patil Stadium on Sunday.
Put in to bat after a rain-delayed toss, India posted a formidable 298/7 in 50 overs, the second-highest total ever in a Women’s World Cup final. Young opener Shafali Verma’s scintillating 87 off 78 balls set the tone, while Deepti Sharma’s unbeaten 58 ensured a solid finish.
Late cameos from Richa Ghosh (34 off 24) and Smriti Mandhana (45) kept the scoreboard ticking as South Africa’s disciplined bowling, led by Ayabonga Khaka and Nadine de Klerk, tried to contain the surge.
Chasing 299, South Africa began confidently through Laura Wolvaardt (101) and Tazmin Brits (23), adding 68 for the opening wicket. But a brilliant direct hit by Amanjot Kaur triggered the collapse. From there, Deepti Sharma’s magical spell—a five-wicket haul for the ages—ripped through the Proteas middle order.
Shafali Verma added two vital wickets, including that of Marizanne Kapp (4), as South Africa folded for 246 in 45.3 overs despite Wolvaardt’s valiant ton.
For India, this triumph was more than just a cricketing milestone—it was the culmination of two decades of perseverance. From heartbreaks in 2005 and 2017, the team finally seized glory in 2025, marking the dawn of a new era in Indian women’s cricket.
As the crowd erupted with chants of Vande Mataram, tears of joy flowed freely. Even men’s skipper Rohit Sharma, cheering from the stands, couldn’t hide his emotions as the women’s team achieved what had long eluded the men.
Having beaten Australia in the semi-finals and staying unbeaten at Navi Mumbai, India completed their journey of redemption—avenging their earlier loss to South Africa in the group stage. The win also extended India’s head-to-head dominance, with 21 victories in 35 ODIs against the Proteas.
The DY Patil Stadium will now forever echo with memories of the night the Women in Blue conquered the world.
