India and England are set to clash in the semi-finals of an ICC tournament for the fifth time, adding another chapter to one of cricket’s most compelling knockout rivalries. In their four previous semi-final encounters, the two sides are evenly matched at 2–2. Notably, on both occasions that India defeated England at this stage, they went on to lift the title.
1983 ODI World Cup
The rivalry began in the semi-final of the 1983 Cricket World Cup at Old Trafford, Manchester. Led by Kapil Dev, India stunned hosts England by six wickets. England were bowled out for 213, with Kapil Dev claiming three wickets and Mohinder Amarnath delivering a disciplined spell. In reply, crucial contributions from Amarnath (46), Yashpal Sharma (61), and Sandeep Patil (51* off 32) powered India into their maiden World Cup final. India subsequently defeated the West Indies at Lord’s to claim their first global title.
1987 ODI World Cup
England exacted revenge in the semi-final of the 1987 Cricket World Cup at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Graham Gooch masterminded England’s 35-run victory with a superb 115, dismantling India’s spin attack with audacious sweep shots. Chasing 255, India faltered despite Mohammad Azharuddin’s fighting 64. The defeat ended India’s hopes of winning the title on home soil and marked Sunil Gavaskar’s final ODI appearance.
2022 T20 World Cup
In the semi-final of the 2022 ICC Men's T20 World Cup at Adelaide, England delivered a commanding performance, winning by 10 wickets. Chasing 169, captain Jos Buttler (80*) and Alex Hales (86*) shared an unbroken 170-run stand — then the highest opening partnership in T20 World Cup history. Earlier, Virat Kohli scored 50 and became the first batter to reach 4,000 T20I runs, but India’s total of 168/6 proved insufficient.
2024 T20 World Cup
India responded emphatically in the semi-final of the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup at Providence, Guyana. After early setbacks, captain Rohit Sharma led from the front with 57, supported by Suryakumar Yadav’s 47. India posted 171/7 before bowling England out for 103. Axar Patel (3/23) and Kuldeep Yadav (3 wickets) spearheaded a dominant 68-run victory, avenging the Adelaide defeat. India went on to defeat South Africa in the final to secure the championship.
The upcoming semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai will mark the third consecutive T20 World Cup knockout meeting between the two sides. With the head-to-head record perfectly balanced and a history of high-stakes drama, the stage is set for another defining encounter in ICC tournament history.
