India Flags Minority Atrocities Amid Unrest in Bangladesh

India has voiced serious concern over the continuing unrest in Bangladesh, particularly incidents of violence against religious minorities. Addressing a weekly media briefing on Friday, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal strongly condemned the brutal killing of Hindu youth Deepu Chandra Das in Dhaka, stating that such crimes cannot be overlooked.

“We condemn the murder of the Hindu youth in Dhaka and hope that the culprits will be brought to justice at the earliest,” Jaiswal said.

Rejecting what he described as a “false anti-India narrative” circulating in Bangladesh, the MEA spokesperson asserted that maintaining law and order is the responsibility of Bangladesh’s interim government. He highlighted that more than 2,900 incidents of violence against minorities have been reported during the tenure of the interim administration, stressing that these cannot be dismissed as media exaggeration or routine political clashes.

Jaiswal reiterated that India remains committed to strengthening ties with the people of Bangladesh and has consistently advocated for free and fair elections in the neighbouring country. He added that New Delhi is closely monitoring developments and regularly raising concerns related to minority safety with Bangladeshi authorities.

During the briefing, Jaiswal also responded to other queries, including ongoing efforts by the Indian government to bring back fugitive economic offenders Lalit Modi and Vijay Mallya.
