Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday welcomed the agreement between India's space agency ISRO and Japan's space agency JAXA for the Chandrayaan-5 mission. This mission will explore the south pole of the moon and the resources hidden there, especially water ice (lunar water), under the Lunar Polar Exploration (LUPEX) project. This will be India's fifth Chandrayaan mission. Earlier in 2023, India made history through Chandrayaan-3 and successfully landed on the south pole of the moon, which was appreciated all over the world.
In a joint press conference after talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Modi said, "We welcome the cooperation between ISRO and JAXA for Chandrayaan-5 mission. Our active participation has now gone beyond the boundaries of the earth and it will become a symbol of the progress of humanity." PM Modi said that India's scientific journey is the result of determination, hard work and innovation. He said that Japanese technology and Indian innovation together will touch new heights.
An enforceable agreement for the LUPEX mission was signed. This agreement was exchanged between JAXA Vice President Matsura Mayumi and Indian Ambassador Sibi George. Under this mission, Japan's H3-24L rocket will send Chandrayaan-5 into space. ISRO will build the lander and some scientific equipment. While Japan will send its rover along with ISRO's lander.
PM Modi said that there is a need to explore the surface of the moon in depth, especially in those areas where water ice may be present. This will prove to be an important resource for human settlement and deep space missions in the future. He said that this cooperation is not limited to the government-to-government level, but startup companies and industries of both the countries are also involved in it. This will promote new technology, research and partnership.
India has set a target in its long-term space vision that by the year 2040, Indian astronauts (Gaganyaan passengers) will land on the Moon. Chandrayaan-5 and Loopex missions will prove to be important milestones in this big journey. PM Modi said, “Our partnership will open new frontiers in space and will also improve the lives of people on Earth.”
