India will be in a very strong position on the fifth day of the Birmingham Test. The team declared its second innings at 427 runs on the fourth day and gave England a target of 608 runs. On the fourth day, England lost 3 wickets at 72 runs.
India now needs 7 wickets to win the match and level the series. On the other hand, England needs 536 more runs in 90 overs. If India is unable to take 7 wickets then the match can also be a draw. In the first innings, India scored 587 runs and England scored 407 runs.
India started playing on the fourth day with a score of 64/1. KL Rahul scored 55 and Rishabh Pant scored 65 runs. After him, captain Shubman Gill scored a century. Gill shared a 175-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja. Jadeja scored 69 runs. The team gave a target of 608 runs on the basis of a lead of 180 runs in the first innings.
Jack Crowley was out without opening his account in England's second innings. He was caught by Mohammad Siraj. Ben Duckett was out after scoring 25 runs and Joe Root was out after scoring 6 runs, both were sent to the pavilion by Akashdeep. Ollie Pope returned not out after scoring 24 runs and Harry Brook returned not out after scoring 15 runs. Both will take England's innings forward on the fifth day.
On the third day, England started playing from a score of 77/3. Mohammad Siraj sent Joe Root and Ben Stokes to the pavilion in the same over. Root scored 22 runs, Stokes could not even open his account. Brook and Smith then made a triple century partnership. Brook was out after scoring 158 runs, while Smith remained not out after scoring 184 runs. In front of them, the team was all out for 407 runs.
Fast bowler Chris Woakes, who gave England the first wicket of the innings, took 2 wickets. He sent KL Rahul and Nitish Reddy to the pavilion, both were bowled. Ben Stokes got Yashasvi Jaiswal caught behind. Shoaib Bashir sent Rishabh Pant and Brydon Cars sent Karun Nair to the pavilion.
