India Objects On Brahmaputra Dam Plan Of China

The construction of a mega dam by China on the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) has raised significant concerns for downstream countries like India and Bangladesh. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has highlighted the need for transparency, consultation, and measures to ensure no harm comes to downstream regions.

India, as a lower riparian state, has consistently advocated for its established user rights and emphasized the need for collaborative water management. The concerns are multifaceted, including potential ecological disruption, water availability, and the socio-economic impact on regions dependent on the Brahmaputra. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has also stressed the importance of addressing this issue at the central level, considering the river's critical role in Assam's economy and culture.

This situation underscores the need for international cooperation on transboundary rivers, which are lifelines for millions of people. Ensuring sustainable and equitable use of shared water resources is essential to prevent conflicts and promote regional stability.
