India on Friday urged Saudi Arabia to keep in mind “mutual interests and sensitivities” after Riyadh signed a landmark Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement with Pakistan earlier this week.
The pact, signed on Sept. 17 by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, declares that “any aggression against either of the two countries shall be considered as an aggression against both.” Sharif was accompanied by Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and Defence Minister Khawaja Asif during his visit.
Responding to questions at the weekly media briefing, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said:
“India and Saudi Arabia have a wide-ranging strategic partnership that has deepened considerably in the last few years. We expect that our strategic partnership will keep in mind mutual interests and sensitivities.”
Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, traditional allies, described the agreement as a reflection of their “shared commitment to enhance security” and “strengthen joint deterrence.” The deal underscores Riyadh’s continuing defence cooperation with Islamabad, even as New Delhi has cultivated closer ties with the Kingdom in recent years through trade, energy, investment, and counter-terrorism cooperation.
