India Storm Into Record Fourth T20 World Cup Final

India secured a place in the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup for a record fourth time after defeating England national cricket team by seven runs in a high-scoring semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. With the victory, India national cricket team became the first side in tournament history to reach four finals.

India had previously appeared in the championship matches in 2007, 2014, and 2024, while Pakistan national cricket team, Sri Lanka national cricket team, and England have each reached three finals.

Historic milestones for India

India’s march to the 2026 final produced several remarkable records:

  • The team smashed 88 sixes in the tournament, the highest ever by a team in a single T20 World Cup edition.

  • India also became only the third team to reach consecutive T20 World Cup finals (2024 and 2026), joining Pakistan (2007–2009) and Sri Lanka (2012–2014).

  • The side will now contest its fourth successive ICC white-ball final, having played the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 final and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final in recent years.

Boundary blitz in the semi-final

The semi-final turned into a batting spectacle. Together, India and England struck 34 sixes, setting a new record for the most sixes in a T20 World Cup match. The game also produced 73 boundaries (39 fours and 34 sixes) — the highest in the history of the tournament.

The two teams combined for 499 runs, the second-highest aggregate in T20 International history, behind the 517-run thriller between South Africa national cricket team and West Indies national cricket team in 2023.

India’s total in the match became their second-highest score in T20 World Cup history, behind the 256 they scored against Zimbabwe national cricket team earlier in the tournament.

Six-hitting spree and batting feats

India equalled the record for most sixes in a single innings of a T20 World Cup match, smashing 19 sixes, a mark previously achieved by the Netherlands national cricket team against Ireland national cricket team in 2014.

Across the tournament, Sanju Samson emerged as India’s leading six-hitter with 16 sixes, surpassing Rohit Sharma’s previous record of 15 in the 2024 edition. Shivam Dube struck 15 sixes, while Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya added 14 each. The legendary Yuvraj Singh had previously hit 12 sixes in the 2007 tournament.

Samson’s 89-run knock against England also matched the record held by Virat Kohli for one of the highest innings by an Indian in a T20 World Cup knockout match. Kohli famously scored 89 in the 2016 semi-final against the West Indies, while Gautam Gambhir’s 75 against Pakistan in the 2007 final remains another iconic Indian knockout performance.

With momentum and multiple records in their favour, India now stands on the brink of adding another chapter to its illustrious T20 World Cup legacy.
