India Summons Bangladesh Envoy Amid Protest Fallout

Protests condemning violence against Hindus in Bangladesh erupted across multiple Indian cities on Tuesday following the lynching of a Hindu man in Mymensingh, even as Bangladesh grappled with fresh unrest over the killing of a political activist. The developments triggered a sharp diplomatic exchange between New Delhi and Dhaka, leading to heightened security at Bangladeshi missions in India, detentions, and the temporary suspension of consular services.

The protests were sparked by the killing of 27-year-old Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh on December 18. Das was allegedly beaten to death by a mob over accusations of blasphemy, after which his body was reportedly set on fire. The incident has reignited concerns over the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh.

In response to demonstrations near Bangladeshi diplomatic premises in India, Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma, expressing “grave concern” over the security of its missions. India, in turn, summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah on Tuesday, according to ANI, after Dhaka raised the issue with the Indian envoy earlier.

In Kolkata, members of Bangiyo Hindu Jagran and several other Hindu organisations staged a protest near the Deputy High Commission of Bangladesh, condemning alleged atrocities against Hindus and demanding justice for Dipu Chandra Das. Protesters had planned to submit a deputation, but the situation turned tense as large crowds gathered near the diplomatic premises.

Police said they carried out a lathi charge to prevent a breach of law and order after the situation became volatile. Meanwhile, Bangladesh has also witnessed unrest following the killing of political activist Sharif Osman Hadi, adding to the volatile atmosphere amid growing domestic and diplomatic pressures.
