India Sweat on Abhishek Ahead of Match

India opener Abhishek Sharma has been discharged from the hospital after spending two days under observation due to a stomach infection.

However, uncertainty remains over his participation in India’s upcoming T20 World Cup match against Namibia.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, teammate Tilak Varma said the team management would wait another day before taking a final call on Abhishek’s availability. He revealed that Abhishek had visited the hospital for a check-up soon after arriving in Delhi and is now recovering well.

Abhishek had a brief outing in India’s match against the United States in Mumbai, where he was dismissed off the very first delivery.

Though he did not take the field afterward, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate clarified that the youngster was dealing with a stomach ailment and is on the path to recovery.

“We are waiting on Abhishek's fitness. Depending on his availability, there may be some changes in the team combination,” Ten Doeschate said on Tuesday.

If Abhishek fails to regain full fitness in time, India could consider promoting Sanju Samson to open the innings. Sanju was earlier replaced by Ishan Kishan as wicketkeeper-batsman following a string of underwhelming performances, including against New Zealand.

In positive news for the Indian camp, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is fit and available for selection against Namibia. Bumrah had missed the opening match against the USA due to illness but bowled at full intensity during Tuesday’s practice session in Delhi.

All-rounder Washington Sundar has also rejoined the squad after recovering from a side strain sustained during the New Zealand series. He participated actively in the nets and had an extended batting session during throwdowns, signaling match readiness.

India is expected to take a final decision on team composition after assessing Abhishek’s fitness ahead of the Namibia encounter.
