India Votes in Favor of Palestine For Full UN Membership

The UN General Assembly has overwhelmingly supported Palestine's full membership. India on Friday voted in favor of the draft UNGA resolution. The draft stated that Palestine was eligible and should be admitted as a full member state.
It recommended that the Security Council consider the matter once again. America had vetoed a similar proposal in the Security Council. America and Israel voted against the resolution in UNGA.
Palestine's membership received overwhelming support in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The UN General Assembly has overwhelmingly supported Palestine's full membership. India on Friday voted in favor of the draft UNGA resolution.
The draft stated that Palestine was eligible and should be admitted as a full member state. It recommended that the Security Council consider the matter once again.
America had vetoed a similar proposal in the Security Council. America and Israel voted against the resolution in UNGA.
A special emergency session meeting was called in the morning in the General Assembly consisting of 193 members. The Arab Group's resolution in support of Palestine's full membership in the UN was presented in the United Nations.
The UAE, which chairs the Arab group, introduced the proposal in May. Along with India, 143 countries voted in favor of the resolution. 9 votes were cast against the proposal.
Whereas 25 countries did not participate in voting. After the voting the United Nations erupted in applause.
The resolution determined that Palestine is eligible for membership in the United Nations in accordance with Article 4 of the Charter of the United Nations and should therefore become a UN member.
It recommended that the UN Security Council reconsider Palestine's membership. India was the first non-Arab country to recognize the Palestine Liberation Organization as the sole and legitimate representative of the Palestinian people in 1974.
In 1988, India was one of the first countries to recognize Palestine.
Police removed a pro-Palestinian tent at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) early Friday and escorted protesters off the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The crackdown came just hours before police removed a tent at the University of Arizona and fired tear gas at protesters.
Police arrived at the MIT campus at 4 a.m. and gave the protesters 15 minutes to leave. The university president said that 10 protesters who did not leave the scene were arrested.
Meanwhile, the crowd gathered outside the complex raised slogans but was dispersed by 6 am.
In Tucson, University of Arizona campus police fired tear gas at protesters Thursday night. Early Friday in Philadelphia, police detained people who had been camping on the University of Pennsylvania campus for more than two weeks.
Protests began about three weeks ago at Columbia University in New York City. It has since spread to college campuses across the country. The protesters are trying to draw attention to the deaths in the Israel-Hamas war and are calling on their educational institutions to stop doing business with Israel or companies supporting the war.
