Vote counting is underway in Bangladesh following Thursday’s general election, with preliminary results indicating that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has taken an early lead. According to initial trends, the BNP has secured 38 seats so far.
A simple majority in the 300-member Parliament requires 150 seats. Polling was held for 299 constituencies.
The Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance is also in the fray, closely watching the evolving results. Voter turnout stood at 47.91% as of 2 pm, according to data from approximately 36,000 polling stations across the country.
Interim government Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus, BNP chief Tariq Rahman, and prominent student leader Nahid Islam cast their votes during the day. Speaking to reporters, Yunus described the election as the birth of a “new Bangladesh.”
However, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina rejected the electoral process, terming it fraudulent and demanding that the results be annulled. She also called for Yunus’s resignation, intensifying the political confrontation.
The polling process was marred by violence in several regions.
In Khulna, BNP leader Mohibuzzaman Kochi was killed during a clash with Jamaat-e-Islami activists outside a voting centre.
Additionally, crude bombs were hurled near polling stations in Munshiganj-3 and Gopalganj Sadar. Three people sustained injuries in the Gopalganj explosion.
Reacting to developments, India adopted a cautious stance. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that New Delhi would assess the mandate only after the final results are declared.
As counting continues, the election outcome is poised to significantly influence Bangladesh’s domestic political landscape and regional geopolitics.
