India's D Gukesh created history by becoming the world champion in chess. Eighteen-year-old D Gukesh became the youngest world champion in the game of 64 squares. Gukesh defeated China's world champion Ding Liren on Thursday in the 14th and final game of the World Championship despite playing with black pieces. With the victory, Gukesh got 7.5 points. He won the match 7.5-6.5 and won the world title.
Gukesh became emotional after the victory. There were tears of joy in his eyes. He was trying to control himself but his tears were not stopping.
Gukesh surpassed Russian legend Garry Kasparov to become world champion. Kasparov was the youngest world champion ever. He became champion in 1985 at the age of 22.
Chennai's Gukesh is the second Indian to become a world champion after Vishwanathan Anand. Gukesh is a disciple of five-time world champion Anand and trains at his academy, Westbridge Anand Chess Academy. Anand is Gukesh's idol.
The decisive 14th game was heading towards a draw. It was believed that the world champion would be decided through a tiebreaker, but in the 55th move Liren made a huge mistake, which Gukesh took advantage of and won.
This was Gukesh's first win with black pieces against Liren in the entire tournament. He won three games, lost two and nine games ended in a draw.
The year 2024 is like a fairy tale for Gukesh. This year he won the Candidates Tournament and earned the right to challenge Ding Liren.
