Pakistan’s victory over the UAE on Wednesday sealed a much-anticipated rematch with India in the Asia Cup Super 4 stage. Both India and Pakistan advanced from Group A, ensuring another high-voltage encounter between the arch-rivals on September 21 in Dubai.
In the group stage, India had outplayed Pakistan with a comfortable seven-wicket win. The Super 4 format guarantees that every qualifier faces the others once, which set up the second meeting between the neighbors. The schedule, pre-fixed by the Asian Cricket Council, lists the A1 vs A2 fixture on September 21, translating into India (A1) against Pakistan (A2).
Meanwhile, Group B will finalize its two entrants today, with Sri Lanka and Afghanistan battling in a virtual knockout.
The upcoming clash comes amid a simmering off-field controversy. During the group-stage game, Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav declined to shake hands with Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha at the toss, prompting Agha to boycott the post-match interview. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) called the incident “against the spirit of the game” and demanded the removal of referee Andy Pycroft. However, the ICC dismissed the request, allowing Pycroft to continue in his role.
The Dubai clash on Sunday is expected to draw massive attention, with both cricketing powerhouses eager to assert dominance on Asian cricket’s biggest stage.
