Interpol notice for Mahanta, Sharma in Zubeen case

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said Interpol lookout notices have been issued against North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and singer Zubeen Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, both wanted for questioning in connection with Zubeen’s death by drowning in Singapore on September 19.

Sarma said the duo, currently absconding but active on social media, must appear before the CID or a court by October 6 or face tougher police action. Their bank accounts and credit cards have been frozen.

“They cannot escape by giving statements on Facebook or writing open letters. We will track them down as we have tracked down rapists and poachers,” Sarma warned in a Facebook Live address, adding that anticipatory bail attempts would be resisted.

The CM said he has urged the Gauhati High Court to set up a judicial commission headed by a sitting judge to ensure transparency and has also briefed Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He assured that the case will be handed over to the CBI if Assam Police fails to deliver justice.

Appealing to the public to remain calm, Sarma cautioned against politicising the tragedy:

“This is Zubeen’s Assam. Violence will not bring justice. The law will.”

Recalling his personal bond with the late singer, Sarma said he was “no less a fan than anyone else” and promised that justice will be ensured.
