Bangladesh’s interim government has imposed a sweeping ban on the publication or broadcast of any statements made by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, citing national security concerns. The National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) announced that Hasina has been formally declared a proclaimed offender and fugitive, warning that her remarks could “incite violence, fuel unrest, and undermine social harmony.”
Interpol Assistance to Be Sought
Authorities confirmed plans to seek Interpol’s cooperation to extradite Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim said a copy of the verdict and arrest warrants would be forwarded to Interpol via the Foreign Ministry.
Awami League Calls Nationwide Shutdown
The banned Awami League has rejected the ICT verdict and called a nationwide shutdown today. In a video message, senior leader Jahangir Kabir Nanak condemned the ruling as “biased” and politically motivated.
Nanak questioned the tribunal’s process, highlighting that:
The trial began on August 14 and ended with a verdict on November 17.
Only 20 days of hearings were held over two months.
Out of 84 witnesses, just 54 testified.
The Chief Justice was absent for a month before the verdict was delivered.
The party has also demanded the resignation of interim leader Mohammad Yunus and his cabinet.
Death Sentence for Hasina and Former Home Minister
The ICT sentenced Sheikh Hasina to death on charges of inciting and ordering murders linked to the July 2024 student protests. She received life imprisonment in several other cases. Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan was also sentenced to death.
The courtroom reportedly erupted in applause when the verdict was announced.
Other Verdicts and Asset Seizures
Former Inspector General of Police Abdullah Al-Mamun, who turned approver, received a five-year prison sentence and remains in custody. The tribunal also ordered the confiscation of properties belonging to Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan.
Following the verdict, interim Prime Minister Mohammad Yunus renewed the government’s demand for India to deport Sheikh Hasina.
