Iran has reportedly reached a consensus on the selection of its next Supreme Leader, though an official announcement has yet to be made. According to a report by Al Jazeera, the Assembly of Experts—the constitutional body responsible for appointing the country’s Supreme Leader—has finalized its choice.
Assembly member Mohsen Heydari stated that a majority of members had endorsed what he described as the most qualified candidate for the position. Another member of the body, Mohammad Mehdi Mirbagheri, also confirmed that the selection process had reached a consensus stage.
Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has issued a warning that any potential successor to Iran’s current Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei could be considered a target. The Israeli military also indicated that individuals involved in the succession process may face similar risks.
Among the prominent names previously discussed as possible successors was Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the current Supreme Leader. However, Donald Trump has stated that the United States would not accept Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s next Supreme Leader.
Amid the ongoing conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran, significant damage has reportedly been inflicted on civilian infrastructure in Iran. Reports indicate that approximately 6,668 civilian areas have been targeted, resulting in damage to 5,535 houses and 1,041 shops. In addition, 14 medical centres and 65 schools have reportedly been affected by the attacks.
Casualty figures from the conflict suggest that around 1,701 people have died so far. On the Israeli side, approximately 1,765 individuals have reportedly been injured since the escalation of hostilities.
