Israel has reportedly carried out an airstrike in the Iranian city of Qom amid the ongoing process to appoint a new Supreme Leader in Iran. According to initial reports, the strike targeted a building associated with the Assembly of Experts, where senior clerical figures were said to have convened.
The Assembly of Experts, an 88-member constitutional body, is entrusted with the authority to appoint and, if necessary, dismiss Iran’s Supreme Leader. The reported strike caused extensive structural damage to the premises. However, officials have yet to release verified information regarding casualties or the number of individuals present inside the building at the time of the attack.
The development comes in the wake of claims that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, was killed in a joint US-Israeli strike on the first day of the ongoing conflict. Since then, the position of Supreme Leader has reportedly remained vacant, intensifying political uncertainty within the country.
Meanwhile, the Iranian Red Crescent Society has released figures outlining the scale of the devastation over the past four days. According to the organization, 787 people have been killed, 153 cities have come under attack, and a total of 1,039 strikes have been carried out across 504 locations.
Independent verification of these claims remains limited, and the situation continues to evolve amid escalating hostilities in the region.
