India’s Jaismine Lamboria created history on Saturday by clinching the country’s first-ever gold medal at the World Boxing Championships 2025. The Commonwealth Games medalist outpunched Poland’s Julia Szeremeta, the Paris 2024 Olympic silver medalist, in the 57kg final to etch her name in Indian sporting history.
The bout was a thrilling contest. Jaismine, who trailed in the opening round, made a strong comeback in the second and maintained her dominance to seal a 4-1 split decision win. “This feeling can’t be expressed, I’m so happy to be a world champion. After my early exit at Paris 2024, I went away and improved my technique physically and mentally. This is the result of consistent work for a year,” she told Olympics.com after the victory.
For Jaismine, this triumph is a redemption after her disappointing Olympic campaign last year, where she made an early exit.
India’s women pugilists ensured a memorable outing in Liverpool. Apart from Jaismine’s historic gold, Nupur secured a silver medal in the 80kg category, while veteran Pooja Rani clinched bronze. However, the Indian men’s team had a lackluster run, finishing without a podium finish.
With three medals from the women’s squad, India reaffirmed its rising dominance in women’s boxing on the global stage.
