Kargil Vijay Diwas: Know The History

Kargil Vijay Diwas, celebrated every year on 26 July, is a very important day in the history of India. It is celebrated to pay tribute to the bravery of Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country during the 1999 Kargil War. 

This day honors the courage and sacrifice of Indian soldiers who defended the sovereignty of the country. 

This year Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Drass in Ladakh on 26 July to attend the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas.

The history of Kargil Vijay Diwas is linked to the war between India and Pakistan in early 1971, which led to East Pakistan becoming a separate country named 'Bangladesh'. Even after this, the two countries continued to clash with each other, including the fight to dominate the Siachen Glacier by deploying military outposts on the surrounding mountainous areas. 

They also tested their nuclear weapons in 1998, which led to long-standing hostility between the two.

Therefore, to maintain peace and stability and to resolve the tension, it was vowed to move towards a bilateral peaceful solution to the Kashmir issue by signing the 'Lahore Declaration' in February 1999.

Pakistani troops and terrorists, in a nefarious move to create unrest and break the link between Kashmir and Ladakh, intruded into Indian territory across the Line of Control (LoC) in North Kargil and occupied high hill peaks.

When India became aware of the infiltration in May 1999, the Indian Army had to launch 'Operation Vijay' and the Kargil War took place. The conflict between India and Pakistan took place from May to July 1999 in the Kargil district of Kashmir and on the LoC. The fierce battle continued in the inaccessible mountainous terrain for about two months. Under 'Operation Vijay', the Indian Army managed to drive away the Pakistani intruders and successfully captured Tiger Hill and other strategic locations.

Indian soldiers achieved this victory after three months of struggle on 26 July 1999. Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year on 26 July to honor India's victory in the war, the bravery and sacrifice of Indian soldiers.

The celebration of Kargil Vijay Diwas is also a powerful symbol of national unity and patriotism. The Kargil war united people from all corners of India in support of the army.

Moreover, stories of bravery and valour of war inspire future generations, instilling in them a sense of duty and dedication towards the nation. Kargil Vijay Diwas is also celebrated so that the sacrifices of the martyrs are not forgotten
