Kargil War Was Mistake. Pakistan "Violated" Lahore Agreement: Nawaz Sharif

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has admitted that Pakistan violated the 1999 Lahore Agreement, signed by India's then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

"It was our mistake," he said, indirectly referring to General Pervez Musharraf's intrusion into Kargil.

Former Pakistan PM Sharif admitted in a meeting of his party, "On May 28, 1998, Pakistan conducted five nuclear tests. After that, Vajpayee sahab came here and made an agreement with us but we violated that agreement... it was our mistake."

The Lahore Agreement is a peace treaty between the two warring neighbours which focused on, among other things, maintaining peace and security and promoting people-to-people contact between the two countries.

However, according to Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan violated it soon after by infiltrating into Kargil. This infiltration by the Pakistani army led to the Kargil war.

Pervez Musharraf, who was then the Army Chief of Pakistan, secretly ordered his army to infiltrate the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir in March 1999.

When India came to know about this infiltration, a large-scale war broke out. India won the war when Nawaz Sharif was the Prime Minister. In fact, today Pakistan has celebrated the 26th anniversary of its first nuclear test.

"President Bill Clinton offered five billion US dollars to stop Pakistan from conducting nuclear tests, but I refused," he said in a meeting of his party Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) or PMLN.

Targeting Imran Khan, he said, "If people like (former Prime Minister) Imran were in my seat, they would have accepted Clinton's offer."

After the decision of the Supreme Court of Pakistan in the Panama Papers case, three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had to resign from his post of PM.

Later he had to shift to Britain. Six years later, on Tuesday, he was elected 'unopposed' as the President of PML-N. Nawaz called all the cases against him false, due to which he had to resign from the post of Prime Minister in 2017.

He also alleged that he was removed from the post of PM so that Imran Khan, who is currently in jail on corruption charges, could be brought to power.

He also mentioned the message he received from the ISI chief in 2014 to resign from the post of Prime Minister and said, 'When I refused, he threatened to make an example of me.'
