The CBI has taken major action in the Kolkata trainee doctor rape-murder case amidst talks between doctors and CM Mamata Banerjee.
The Central Investigation Agency (CBI) on Saturday arrested former principal of RG Kar College and Hospital Sandeep Ghosh and Tala Police Station in-charge officer Abhijit Mandal on charges of delay in filing an FIR and destroying evidence in the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. On the other hand, talks took place today between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and junior doctors, but the doctors remained adamant on their demands. The victim's mother has also told CM Mamata that she should accept all the demands of the doctors.
The junior doctors on strike were also demanding strict action against former principal Sandeep Ghosh, during which the CBI also arrested him. Sandeep Ghosh, the Station House Officer (SHO) who initially investigated the rape and murder of the trainee doctor on the night of 9 August, has been arrested by the CBI for trying to mislead investigators and hide evidence.
Former principal Sandeep Ghosh and the police officer allegedly tried to disrupt the investigation of the rape and murder case, which caused outrage across the country.
The arrests came after the protesting doctors returned from their residence without meeting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as the protesters wanted the meeting to be live-streamed but she rejected their request. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is questioning Sandip Ghosh over alleged financial irregularities, has now added rape and murder charges against him.
The CBI also conducted a polygraph test of Sandip Ghosh. The Calcutta High Court has given the CBI a three-week deadline to submit a progress report on the ongoing investigation into the case. The report is expected to be presented before the court on September 17
