Kuki-Zo Holds Mega Rally in Manipur. Demand Separate Union Territory

The demand for a separate administration has once again started rising in Manipur. The movement of the Kuki community demanding a separate administration intensified on Monday after thousands of people participated in a mega rally in the state's Churachandpur district. This movement was organized by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF).

Loud slogans  heard at the rally, demanding separate recognition and Union Territory status for Kuki Zo inhabited areas in the state.

The ITLF had called for a complete shutdown across the district and the agitation coincided with the start of the Lok Sabha session of Parliament on Monday.

While locals in the Valley are against any move towards the fragmentation of the state, Kuki-dominated areas have intensified their demand for a separate administration.

Similar public moments and rallies can be seen in other major Kuki-inhabited districts including Kangpokpi district and Tengnoupal Diamond.

The protesters demand that the central government expedite the process of finding a political solution to the violence in Manipur. The tribals want the creation of a Union Territory with an assembly under Article 239A of the Constitution. Similar rallies were also held in Kangpokpi, Tengnoupal and Pherzaul districts.
