Leaders of Autonomous Councils of NE States Meets Amit Shah

Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma said on Thursday a delegation of autonomous district councils from the Northeast met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi and discussed regional issues.

Debbarma posted on the social media site Facebook and wrote, "Met Hon'ble Home Minister Amit Shah along with the leaders of the councils of the Northeast. The Home Minister has assured us that within a month all the issues related to the councils will be addressed amicably. A committee will also be formed to resolve the related issues."

A joint delegation of 10 autonomous councils of northeastern states met Union Home Minister Amit Shah here on Thursday, seeking his intervention to resolve the long-standing issue of tribal self-governing bodies.

The delegation, led by Pramod Boro, chief executive member of Assam's Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), submitted a memorandum to Shah, requesting him to ensure the introduction and passing of the 125th Amendment Bill, 2019 in Parliament with necessary amendments.

The key provisions of the bill include the appointment of a finance commission to review the financial status of district, village and municipal councils.

This commission, if also formed, will make recommendations regarding the distribution of taxes between states and district councils, as well as grants-in-aid to autonomous councils from the Consolidated Fund of the states.

In the meeting, Shah assured the delegation that all issues related to the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill (2019) would be resolved within a month, said a press release issued by the Autonomous Councils. The autonomous councils were formed under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution
