Magnitude 5.8 Earthquake Jolts Assam; Tremors Felt Across NE Including Tripura

A strong earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struck Assam on Sunday afternoon at 4:41 pm, sending tremors across parts of Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Tripura.

According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the epicentre was located in Udalguri district at latitude 26.78°N, longitude 92.33°E, with a shallow depth of 5 km.

Officials said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property.

The quake was followed by two aftershocks. The first, measuring 3.1 magnitude, occurred at 4:58 pm in Udalguri district, while the second, of 2.9 magnitude, was recorded at 5:21 pm in neighbouring Sonitpur district. Both were at a depth of 5 km.

Union Minister and former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed concern on X, writing:
“Major earthquake in Assam. My prayers for everyone’s safety and well-being. Urge all to stay alert!”

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, and people across the region have been advised to remain cautious.
