A small festival of elections has come to India again. Voting will be held on all 288 seats of Maharashtra Assembly on Wednesday, 20 November. Along with this, voting will also be held on Wednesday on 38 seats of the second and final phase of Jharkhand Assembly elections. Also, voting is to be held on Wednesday in UP, Punjab, Kerala and Uttarakhand. The results of all these will be declared on November 23.
Actually, elections will be held on all 288 assembly seats of Maharashtra on Wednesday. Apart from this, elections are also to be held on 38 seats in the second and final phase of Jharkhand assembly elections. This phase of Jharkhand elections includes 18-18 seats of Santhal Pargana and North Chotanagpur division and 2 seats of South Chotanagpur. In this phase, 8 seats are reserved for Scheduled Tribes, 3 for Scheduled Castes and 27 for General category.
Along with this, if we talk about by-elections, then on Wednesday, voting will be held for by-elections on 15 assembly seats of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Kerala and Uttarakhand. Elections will be held on 9 seats in Uttar Pradesh, Katehari, Karhal, Meerapur, Ghaziabad, Majhawan, Sisamau, Khair, Phulpur and Kundarki. 90 candidates are in the fray for these seats, out of which the maximum 14 candidates are from Ghaziabad.
By-elections will be held on 4 seats in Punjab , Gidderbaha, Dera Baba Nanak, Chabbewal SC and Barnala. These seats have fallen vacant after those MLAs won the Lok Sabha elections. Earlier, Gidderbaha, Dera Baba Nanak and Chabbewal were occupied by the Congress, while the Aam Aadmi Party won the Barnala seat. 45 candidates are in the fray in these elections, including 3 women. A total of 6.96 lakh voters are registered in these areas.
By-elections will also be held on the Palakkad seat in Kerala and the Kedarnath seat in Uttarakhand. The Palakkad seat fell vacant after Congress MLA Shafi Parambil won the Lok Sabha elections, while the Kedarnath seat fell vacant after the death of BJP MLA Shailarani Rawat.
Voting for all 288 seats of Maharashtra Assembly will start at 7 am and end at 6 pm. Counting of votes will take place on November 23. During the election campaign, prominent leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several Union Ministers campaigned in the state for their respective candidates.
Increase in the number of candidates
Compared to the last Maharashtra assembly elections, the number of candidates has increased by 28 percent this time. This year 4,136 candidates are contesting the elections, while in 2019 3,239 candidates were in the fray. Among these candidates, 2,086 are independents. Rebel candidates are in the fray on more than 150 seats, including Mahayuti and MVA candidates contesting against their party's official candidates. Officials said that the updated number of registered voters as of October 30 is 9,70,25,119.
There are 5,00,22,739 male voters, 4,69,96,279 female voters and 6,101 transgender voters. Apart from this, the total number of Divyang voters is 6,41,425, while the number of service voters of the armed forces is 1,16,170. This time there will be 1,00,186 polling stations in Maharashtra, whereas in the 2019 assembly elections, their number was 96,654.

The Election Commission has also made full preparations for these elections. In most places, voting will start at 7 am and will continue till 5 pm. The results of the elections and by-elections in both the states will be declared on November 23. Policemen have been deployed at the polling booths to ensure that there is no disturbance in the atmosphere of peace and security. On the other hand, all the polling stations in Jharkhand will also be monitored live. For this, two cameras have been installed inside and outside the polling station.
