Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Tuesday mounted a scathing political attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her reported appearance before the Supreme Court as an advocate in connection with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, dismissing the move as “pure theatrics.”
Addressing reporters on the sidelines of official engagements in Unakoti district, Saha openly questioned Banerjee’s legal standing and the propriety of her direct courtroom intervention.
“I am not aware of her practising law at any stage. Members of the legal fraternity would be better placed to clarify this. Even if one holds an LL.B. degree, can a person without active practice simply appear and argue before the Supreme Court? I honestly do not know,” Saha remarked.
Terming the episode a publicity exercise, the Tripura Chief Minister added, “From my perspective, this appears to be nothing more than a tamasha.”

Earlier in the day, referring to media reports that Banerjee appeared in court wearing an advocate’s robe to argue her own petition, Saha took a sharper swipe, saying, “Today I read in the newspapers that she is a lawyer. When she became one, I am not aware. Wearing a black coat and going to the Supreme Court where she practised is unknown to me.”
Escalating his criticism, Saha resorted to sarcasm, stating, “During elections, sometimes her leg is injured, sometimes her hand is injured.

This time, she put on a black coat and went to argue on the SIR issue. It is strange—so many actors and dramatists—while Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains focused on strengthening national security and accelerating development.”
Saha also asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party was poised to expand its political footprint in West Bengal. “The NDA is steadily gaining ground across states. This time, the BJP will form the government in West Bengal,” he claimed.
Banerjee, a trained advocate, reportedly became the first sitting Chief Minister to personally argue a case before the apex court after filing an interlocutory application seeking permission to present her submissions in person.
The Tripura Chief Minister made the remarks after attending a series of development programmes in Unakoti district, where he laid the foundation stone for a bridge over the Manu River connecting Saidarpar and Sardapalli in Fatikroy, and inaugurated the newly constructed PM Shri Hajibari Class XII School building.
Reiterating the BJP’s governance narrative, Saha said development remains the sole agenda of the BJP-led “double-engine government,” in contrast to what he described as the Opposition’s reliance on political spectacle.
