Manipur CM Biren Singh Appreciates Centre's Efforts To Bring Back Indians From Bangladesh

Nearly 1,000 Indian students have returned home after violence broke out in Bangladesh against reservation in government jobs. Most of them are from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir and Meghalaya. More than 4,000 Indian students are still stranded in various universities of Bangladesh.

Meanwhile Chief Minister of Manipur N Biren Singh appreciated the initiative of central government to bring back the stranded.

In his social media platform CM Singh mentioned:

I have personally communicated with Hon’ble Union Minister of External Affairs, Shri S Jaishankar ji on the developing situation in Bangladesh, and we are coordinating on arranging a safe return of Manipuris back to the country. 

The situation is being closely monitored by Hon’ble Union Minister, Shri S Jaishankar ji himself, and I really appreciate the steps he has taken for providing safe passage for all the Indian citizens from Bangladesh.

On the otherh hand The Ministry of External Affairs said on Saturday that the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh is in constant touch with the concerned authorities to ensure the safety of Indian citizens and students. The ministry said that so far 778 Indian students have returned to India through various road routes. Apart from this, about 200 students have returned to the country through regular flights via Dhaka and Chittagong airports.

Protesting students in Bangladesh are demanding that the Sheikh Hasina government abolish the controversial job-quota system. Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said on Friday that the total number of Indian nationals in Bangladesh is estimated to be around 15,000. The Indian High Commission in Dhaka and deputy high commissions in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet and Khulna are assisting in the repatriation of Indian nationals, the Foreign Ministry said.

The statement said that necessary steps are being taken by the High Commission and Assistant High Commissions to facilitate safe travel to the India-Bangladesh international border in coordination with the local authorities. The Ministry is coordinating with civil aviation, immigration and BSF officials to ensure smooth and safe travel of its citizens.

The Ministry of External Affairs said that the Indian High Commission and Assistant High Commission are in regular touch with more than 4,000 students studying in various universities in Bangladesh and providing them necessary assistance. Students from Nepal and Bhutan have also been assisted to enter India on request.

The Ministry said the High Commission in Dhaka is coordinating with the civil aviation authorities and commercial airlines of Bangladesh to ensure seamless flights from Dhaka and Chittagong to India, which can be availed by our citizens to return home
