Manipur Congress Demands Immediate Local Body Elections

The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has urged the state’s President Rule administration to promptly announce elections for local self-government bodies, including Panchayats, the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC), Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), and Autonomous District Councils (ADCs).

At a press conference, MPCC spokesperson Ningombam Bupenda Meitei said the terms of these bodies have long expired, depriving people of grassroots governance. Citing a recent Manipur High Court order, he stressed that Gram Panchayat elections must be held within six months as directed by the court.

Meitei recalled that the 5th Gram Panchayat tenure ended in October 2022, while ADC terms expired in November 2020. He also pointed out that despite earlier High Court directives in 2022 for IMC and ULB elections, the government has failed to issue a notification.

Alleging that these delays have stalled development, the Congress demanded that the President Rule administration, under central supervision, prioritise holding the long-pending elections without waiting for further court interventions.
