Manipur Tops Northeast in Violent Crimes: NCRB

Manipur recorded the highest number of violent crimes and rioting cases in the Northeast in 2023, according to the latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

The state, reeling under ethnic clashes between the valley-based Meitei community and the hill-based Kuki tribes since May 2023, also registered the highest number of crimes and atrocities against Scheduled Tribes in the entire country last year.

According to the report, Manipur reported 14,427 violent crimes in 2023, a staggering jump from 631 cases in 2022 and 545 in 2021. Assam, with 11,552 incidents, ranked second in the region.

Crimes against Scheduled Tribes surged dramatically, with 3,339 cases in 2023, compared to just one in 2022 and none in 2021.

The state also led the Northeast in cases of rioting (5,421) and arson (6,203). Additionally, 330 robberies and 1,213 dacoities were recorded during the year.

Manipur witnessed 151 murders, 818 attempted murders, 89 kidnappings, and 27 rapes in 2023. Interestingly, crimes against women showed a slight decline, with 201 cases, compared to 248 in 2022 and 302 in 2021.

The surge in crimes coincides with the outbreak of ethnic violence in May 2023, which has so far claimed over 260 lives and displaced thousands, a humanitarian crisis reflected starkly in the NCRB’s findings.
