Manmohan Singh: 6 Time Rajya Sabha MP From Assam, Never Was MP Of LS

Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh breathed his last on Thursday night at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. 

Former PM Manmohan Singh, who is considered the father of economic liberalization in the country, is remembered for many achievements ranging from the Right to Information Act to MNREGA and Food Security Bill. 

Dr. Singh, who has a distinct identity in the country's politics for reforms, also has a unique record in the history since independence.

Dr. Manmohan Singh is the only Prime Minister of the country who was never a member of the Lok Sabha. 

From being the Finance Minister to becoming the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh reached Parliament through the Rajya Sabha. He was elected a member of the Rajya Sabha six times. 

When Dr. Singh was made the Finance Minister in PV Narasimha Rao's government, he was not a member of any House. After being made the Finance Minister, he was elected a Rajya Sabha member for the first time from Assam on a Congress ticket in 1991.

Dr Singh was a Rajya Sabha MP from Assam for five consecutive terms and for the sixth time he reached the Upper House from Rajasthan. 

He was a Rajya Sabha member from Rajasthan from 19 August 2019 to 3 April 2024. As an MP, Manmohan Singh represented Rajasthan in the Rajya Sabha for the last time. In his political career, Dr Singh contested the Lok Sabha elections only once in 1999. 

From Delhi South seat, Dr Singh lost the election against BJP's Vijay Kumar Malhotra by about 30 thousand votes.

In the history of independent India, there have been four Prime Ministers who have reached the post while being a member of Rajya Sabha. 

Dr. Manmohan Singh is the fourth leader to become Prime Minister while being a member of Rajya Sabha. He also holds the record of being the Prime Minister for the longest time while being a member of Rajya Sabha.
